The University of Oklahoma men’s tennis team has earned a preseason national ranking of No. 71 as announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association earlier this month. The Sooners are one of five Big 12 Conference teams ranked among the nation’s top 75 programs.

"I am extremely excited about the upcoming season and hope to improve from last season," said head coach Paul Lockwood. "I am happy to see that we are continuing to rise in preseason rankings and foresee us continuing to excel with our young team and newcomers."

OU is set to begin regular season action this week as the Sooners face Oklahoma Baptist on Fri., Jan. 30 at 12:30 p.m. inside the Woodlake Racquet Club in Oklahoma CIty.

Oklahoma is led by sophomore standout Tommy Garrison (Enid, Okla.) who participated in the 2003 NCAA Doubles Championships. In addition, the team has added freshman Marek Velicka (Prerov, Czech Republic). Head coach Paul Lockwood expects Velicka to impact the program immediatley and has high expectations for his returning letterwinners and newcomers.

Look for the Sooners to continue to improve as they went from a 12 win season in 2002 to 15 victories during the 2003 campaign.
