NORMAN, Okla. University of Oklahoma women’s gymnast Ashley Cooney was named the Big 12 Gymnast of the Week by the conference office Tuesday. Cooney earned the honor for the first time in her career.
The sophomore from Plano, Texas, won her third consecutive all-around title with a 39.350 at the Ohio State Triangular. The scored matched her season-high set the previous week. In addition, Cooney won the vault (9.9) and floor (9.875) while helping Oklahoma to the team title. Her vault score also matched a season-high.
The No. 10 Oklahoma Sooners (7-0) are in the midst of their best season since going undefeated, 13-0, in the regular season and winning the Big Eight Conference title in 1985.
OU travels to Lincoln, Neb., Saturday, Feb. 5, for its meet with the No. 9 Nebraska Cornhuskers. It will be the Cornhuskers’ home opener at Devaney Center, a place where they have not lost a regular season or Big 12 Championship meet since March 1, 1993. The meet begins at 7:30 p.m. CST.
