NORMAN, Okla. Four players on the Oklahoma softball team were named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Midwest All-Region team. Garnering first team acclaim were junior left fielder Norrelle Dickson, freshman designated player Samantha Ricketts and senior center fielder Kristin Vesely. Earning second team honors for the Sooners was sophomore infielder Savannah Long.
“These honors are definitely well deserved for these girls,” head coach Patty Gasso said. “It’s great to see our upperclassmen Norrelle (Dickson) and Kristin (Vesely) be so consistent for us all season and then to see the strides Savannah (Long) and Samantha (Ricketts) have made in elevating their game is exciting because they are so young.”
Dickson picked up the third straight All-Region honor of her career while it marked the second accolade for Vesely. Ricketts and Long are making their first appearance on the Midwest All-Region Team. All-time OU has collected 62 All-Midwest Region honors.
It marked the second week for all four players to be honored. Dickson, Ricketts and Vesely were all named to the All-Big 12 first team last week while Savannah Long earned second team honors. Additionally, Ricketts, the lone freshman on the All-Big 12 first team joined Vesely on the Big 12 All-Tournament team.
All four Sooners are now eligible for All-America honors, which will be announced during the week of the Women’s College World Series.
The Sooners are preparing for NCAA Regionals as they are making their 13th straight appearance in an NCAA Division I Softball Regional this weekend (May 19-21) in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Oklahoma will open Regional No. 9 action against Kent State with the first pitch set for 4:30 p.m. Friday. Host school Michigan will meet Youngstown State in the following game at 7 p.m. The winners of both games Friday will advance to a noon contest on Saturday, which will be televised on ESPN2 with Tracy Warren (play-by-play) and Stacey Nuveman (color) calling the game.
