Sept. 11, 1999

Norman, Okla.- - The University of Oklahoma men's golf team began its fall season in impressive fashion and leads the Ridges Intercollegiate in Johnson City, Tenn., by nine strokes over nationally ranked South Carolina and Arizona. The Sooners haven't won a team championship since capturing the NCAA Central Regional in 1995.

"I'm very pleased with our efforts but to be honest, I'm somewhat surprised," said OU head coach Gregg Grost. "This team isn't the most experienced one that we could have playing, but I'm proud of these guys. Chris James could easily be leading right now. He's come a long way with his game, and after struggling last year, I would love to see him win this."

James, a senior from Edmond, Okla., is just one stroke off the lead after firing an opening-round 69 and even-par 72 in the final round today. OU sophomore J.D. Robertson is currently seventh overall following back-to-back rounds of 72 and is just four shots off the pace.
