NORMAN, Okla. -- Senior Andrei Daescu made Sooner history by making it to the Finals of the D’Novo/ITA All-American Championships, Oct. 11, on the University of Tulsa campus.

Daescu joins the ranks of an elite group of professional tennis players’ including: Benedickt Dorsch, Amer Delic, Malivai Washington, Sargis Sargasian, James Blake and John Isner.

Daescu’s route to the finals was nothing short of miraculous. Daescu defeated the nation’s No. 6, 18, 25, 37 and 70-ranked players on his way to a finals showdown against the No. 2-ranked player in the country, John-Patrick Smith of Tennessee.

However, Daescu was not the only Sooner to shine during the tournament. Junior Ionut Beleleu and freshman Costin Paval advanced to the main draw after impressive outings.

Beleleu, who began tournament play in qualifying action, was one win away from advancing to the quarterfinals of the main draw. Beleleu claimed his highest ranked win over the nation’s No. 16-ranked player. On top of that he posted wins over the nation’s No. 45, 65 and 98-ranked players.

Paval, Roddick’s only recruited player, made quite the All-American debut. Paval began tournament play in pre-qualifying action and after rattling off seven wins, two of which came against the No. 54 and 66-ranked players in the country, he advanced to the main draws.

Roddick has put his stamp on the Sooner tennis program. Roddick’s Sooners had more individuals, three, compete in the main draw than any other Big 12 program (A&M and Texas each had two participants). In fact, Roddick’s three Sooners tied Virginia for the second most participants by a school in the main draw.

Watch Daescu talk about the All-American experience, John Roddick’s coaching style and how he feels the Sooners will do come spring.
