NORMAN, Okla. – The 21st-ranked Oklahoma women’s tennis team improved to 8-2 in Big 12 play after defeating Kansas on Senior Day, 4-3, Sunday at the Gregg Wadley Indoor Tennis Pavilion.

“We’re kind of making a habit of these 4-3 wins,” said OU head coach David Mullins. “It would be nice to get a few more points on the board but those tiebreakers seem to be getting away from us a lot. I’m still happy about it.”

Kansas struck first in the Sooners’ final home event of the season by winning the doubles portion of the match.

Sooner pair Mia Lancaster and Whitney Ritchie defeated Erin Wilbert and Sara Lazarevic at the No. 2 doubles spot, but the Jayhawks would secure the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and 3 positions.

Oklahoma bounced back quickly with four-straight victories in the singles portion of the match.

Marie Pier-Huet shutout Paulina Los at the No. 4 position, 6-0, 6-0, and Whitney Ritchie dominated Sara Lazarevic at the No. 3 spot, 6-2, 6-0, to give the Sooners two quick points.

Alice Radu also made quick work of her opponent, Monica Pezzotti, defeating the Jayhawk, 6-0, 6-2, at the No. 2 position.

Senior Maria Kalashnikova recorded her final regular-season home victory by besting Erin Wilbert at the No. 6 position, 6-1, 6-2, to secure the match for the Sooners.

Fellow senior Ana-Maria Constantinescu took Ekaterina Morozova into a super tiebreaker, but came up short, 6-4, 2-6, (10-6).

KU’s Dylan Windom concluded the match by defeating Mia Lancaster at the No. 5 position, 7-6, 6-4.

Following the match, the Sooners honored their three seniors. Anna-Maria Constantinescu, Maria Kalashnikova, and Tara Eckel were recognized for all of their accomplishments while at the University of Oklahoma.

Mullins reflected on his three graduating seniors and how emotional of a day it was to have them play their final match in Norman.

“I’ve been dreading this day all year, especially this week,” said the OU head coach. “It was a sad morning this morning. I’m just going to have to enjoy this final month or so.”

The Sooners conclude their regular-season schedule April 23 at Oklahoma State.
