STANFORD, Calif. – The University of Oklahoma men’s distance group opened its 2012 outdoor season Friday evening at the Stanford Invitational. Of OU’s five competitors in the men’s 1,500-meter run, four ran times ranking in the top 10 in program history, including Riley Masters’ new program record in the event at three minutes, 41.80 seconds.

Masters’ time is a new collegiate best for the transfer as he becomes the first Sooners to run 3:42.00 or lower in the event. Three other Sooners also improved their times already on the list or joined it. Eric Harasyn finished just behind Masters’ in the event’s top section, taking sixth with a collegiate-best 3:42.15. Harasyn’s time is the second fastest in program history. Masters and Harasyn’s times rank in the top 10 collegiately this year.

Patrick Casey made his Oklahoma debut, finishing 10th in the second section of the race. Casey ran the fifth-best time in program history at 3:42.15. Frezer Legesse was 12th in that section, running a collegiate-best 3:43.95, the sixth fastest time in program history.

George Alex lowered his program record in the men’s 5,000-meter run to 13:35.27. Alex’s time is a collegiate best and the sixth fastest by a collegiate in the event this year.

Kevin Williams ran a season-best 3:49.23 in section four of the men’s 1,500-meter run.

The Sooners also opened competition at the Sun Angel Classic in Tempe, Ariz., with the men’s and women’s hammer throws this afternoon. Holden Mitchell threw a collegiate-best 186 feet, one inch to finish fourth. Rylee Rackley finished ninth on the women’s side with a throw of 172-11. Angel Togafau was 14th with a mark of 163-8.

Bill Kogel, Kevin Schwab, Ryan Poland and Aaron Sherf were all scheduled to compete in the men’s 10,000-meter run at the Stanford Invitational beginning at 11:32 p.m. CT. Those results will be made available Saturday morning.
