Sooners Down Cameron and OBU

NORMAN, Okla.The Oklahoma men’s tennis team defeated Cameron and Oklahoma Baptist University Wednesday afternoon at the OU Headington Family Tennis Center.

Despite strong winds, the Sooners defeated the Aggies 5-2 and shut out Oklahoma Baptist in two consecutive matches, 6-0, 5-0.

“I am glad that the conditions were windy and it was tough on both teams” OU Head Coach Paul Lockwood said. “In a way it diluted the quality of play somewhat on both sides of the net, but I think that our players learned from and hopefully we can get better in these conditions in the weeks to come.”

Match Results

Against Cameron, Oklahoma swept the doubles competition and went 4-2 in singles play. Junior Federico Chavarria and freshman Ondrej Kacmar picked up easy wins at No.3 and No.6 singles. Chavarria defeated Cameron’s Ignacio Murgier 6-3, 6-3, while Kacmar swept the Aggies’ Vitas Van Dijk 6-0, 6-0.

Freshmen Andrei Daescu and Vaclav Kucera paired up for doubles competition and dropped an 8-2 decision on Cameron’s tandem of Jordi Mullor and Travis Hinst.

The Sooners played two separate matches against Oklahoma Baptist. The first match consisted of six singles matches and no doubles competition. Four singles players and one doubles pair competed in the second match

In the first match against Oklahoma Baptist, sophomore Rob McKenzie defeated OBU’s Tim Landvatter 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 1 spot. At No.5 singles junior Ryan Thomas downed Oklahoma Baptist’s Andrew Sharp, 6-2, 6-3.

In the second match against Oklahoma Baptist, Oklahoma tadem of senior Marek Velicka and sophomore Sergey Avdeyev dropped an 8-2 decision on the OBU’s duo of Peter McCorkle and Andrew Sharp.

The Sooners swept Oklahoma Baptist in singles competition and held each match to two games.

“I think we played well but we can always get better,” Kucera said.

Oklahoma has won their last eight matches and improved its overall record to 9-1. The Sooners are currently ranked No. 43 in the latest ITA poll and are tied for best record in the Big 12 with Oklahoma State.

Oklahoma will return to action Sunday, March 4 when they face Oral Roberts. The two teams will square off at Noon at the OU Headington Family Tennis Center. Live scoring of the match will be available at with a recap at the end of the match.
