This Week In Sooner Tennis The Oklahoma men’s tennis team (9-1) will host Cameron on Wed., March 10, and regional opponent Southwest Missouri State on Fri., March 12, at the OU Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman. Both matches begin at 2 p.m. Admission is free.
Series Record/Last Time Oklahoma swept Cameron, 6-1, last season after not playing the Aggies since 1996. In head coach Paul Lockwood’s 16 seasons at Oklahoma, the Sooners have only fell once to Southwest Missouri State in 2001. OU defeated the Bears, 4-2, in the 2003 season.
Last Match Recap
OU started the weekend off with a win over Texas-Arlington, 5-2, at the UTA Tennis Center in Arlington, Texas on Friday. The win marked the second victory over the Mavericks this season.
The Sooners were then upset in a close 4-3 match against the No. 59-ranked Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday, marking the Sooners first loss of the season.
Oklahoma tied with the Ragin’ Cajuns in singles, 3-3, but then fell in doubles play after clinching only one out of three games. The No. 1 doubles pair of junior Matt Long (Ft. Worth, Texas) and sophomore Alexei Ivanov (Izhevsk, Russia) fought diligently to post the only win over Louisiana-Lafayette’s Ivan Kovalev and Marc Castellana, 9-7.
Newcomers Remain Undefeated
Only the three Sooner newcomers remain undefeated in singles play after ten matches. Junior Ondrej Fukala (Prerov, Czech Republic), sophomore Lee Gregg (Altus, Okla.) and freshman Marek Velicka (Prerov, Czech Republic) are all 10-0 on the season.
OU Will Host 2004 Big 12 Championships
Oklahoma will host the 2004 Men’s and Women’s Big 12 Tennis Championships this spring at the Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman. Tournament action begins Fri., April 30, and runs through Sun., May 2. Admission is $15 for the four-day tournament. An adult single session is $5 and a youth single session is $2. Head Coach Paul Lockwood
Entering his 17th season as Oklahoma head men’s tennis coach is Paul Lockwood. The OU graduate has compiled an overall record of 234-154 (.603) and claimed the Big Eight Conference title in 1992. Lockwood was named the Big Eight Coach of the Year in 1991 and 1992 for his outstanding commitment to Sooner tennis. Lockwood’s teams have also earned seven Academic ITA All-America team honors (1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003).
