NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma women's golf team is back in action for the 16-team Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational on March 8-9 (Monday and Tuesday). The 54-hole tournament, hosted by San Jose State University, will be be played at the 6,223-yard, par-72 Almaden Country Club in San Jose, Calif.
The same five Sooners who helped OU to a ninth-place finish at last week’s UCF Challenge will compete this week.
"I'm definitely excited to be taking the same lineup," OU head coach Veronique Drouin said. "They have shown that they have a lot of potential and are looking forward to competing again this week."
Leading the Sooners for the first time this season is Andrea Sellmeyer (McAlester, Okla.) The senior is coming off a career-best-tying 13th-place finish at the UCF Challenge. She recorded a season-best single-round score of 72 during the tournament's second round.
Adding strength to the lineup in the second spot is Ellen Mueller (Evansville, Ind.) Despite not pacing the Sooners in her usual fashion at last week's tournament, the junior still notched her 13th career top-20 performance, finishing in 17th.
Senior Chelsey Collins (Louisville, Colo.) will play in the third spot for the Sooners in San Jose. Collins tied for 44th place in Florida last week. Freshman Taylor Schmidt (Kincardine, Ontario) will compete in her sixth consecutive tournament this week, while sophomore Brooke Collins (Louisville, Colo.) will also participate the Sooners.
The Sooners will tee off against six teams ranked in the top 50 by Golfweek, including California (No. 12), Oklahoma State (No. 22), UC Davis (No. 25), UC Irvine (No. 36), San Francisco (No. 42) and San Jose State (No. 41). Also in the field are Colorado, Colorado State, Fresno State, Gonzaga, Hawaii, Long Beach State, Nevada, San Diego State and Santa Clara.
Teams will play 36 holes on Monday and the final 18 on Tuesday. Play will commence both days at 10 a.m. CT. Live scoring of the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational is available at www.golfstat.com.
