NORMAN-- The University of Oklahoma men’s tennis team fell to top-ranked Baylor, 6-1, at the Baylor Tennis Center in Waco, Texas. It was the Sooner’s Big 12 Conference opener and first loss of the season. With the loss, OU drops to 11-1 on the season and 0-1 in Big 12 play, while BU improves to 14-0 overall and 3-0 in Big 12 action.
The Bears took an early 1-0 lead by securing the doubles point and handing the Sooners their first doubles point loss this season. However, one Oklahoma pair picked up a win. Senior Silviu Tanasoiu and sophomore Marek Velicka upset the 22nd ranked duo of Michal Kokta and Lars Poerschke, 8-5. With this win, the pair owns a 10-1 spring record and is now 1-0 against Big 12 teams. OU fought hard for the first point of the match, when junior Tommy Garrison and senior Ondrej Fukala lost at the No. 1 spot. The duo lost, 8-5, to Benedikt Dorsch and Matija Zgaga.
OU’s lone point against the defending national champions happened at the No. 5 spot as Garrison defeated Zgaga in a hard-fought three-set match, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. Garrison improves to 6-3 on the season. Fukala lost a close match to Poerschke, 6-3, 7-6, 1-0(11-9), giving him his first singles loss of the season.
The Sooners continue action on Sunday when they play their first home double-header. Oklahoma faces Southwest Missouri State at 12 p.m. and East Central at 4 p.m. at the OU Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman.
