NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma women's golf team fired a 9-over 297 and stands in first place after Monday's first round of the 16-team Baylor Spring Invitational. The Sooners are competing at the par-72 Twin Rivers Golf Club in Waco, Texas, with 18 more holes to be played this afternoon and 18 more Tuesday.
OU owns a three-stroke lead over second-place Arkansas-Little Rock (300) and a six-stroke advantage over host and third-place Baylor (303). Texas Tech (308) stands in fourth place and Oregon (310) in fifth.
Individually, three Sooners are in the top six through 18 holes. Freshman Taylor Schmidt leads OU in third place as she birdied the 14th and 17th holes en route to a season-low 72 (E). Junior Ellen Mueller, who recorded birdies on holes 8 and 18, shot a 1-over 73 and is in fifth place.
Senior Ryanne Elmer registered four consecutive birdies (holes 13, 14, 15 and 16) on her way to a season-low-tying 75 (+3). Elmer heads into round two tied for sixth place. Senior Andrea Sellmeyer notched birdies on holes 8 and 14 to card a first-round 77 (+5) and is tied for 14th place. Fellow senior Chelsey Collins birdied hole No. 6 and carded an 83 (+11). She is in 66th place.
Mallory Fraiche of Arkansas-Little Rock leads the field with a 3-under-par 69.
