Track And Field Sends Competitors To National Meets

NORMAN, Okla. - Current and former University of Oklahoma track and field athletes will be in competition this weekend as the United State and Jamaica hold their national championships.

Two-time Big 12 discus champion Bambi Carson is one of four Sooners who will travel to Eugene, Ore., for the U.S. Senior Nationals Thursday through Sunday. Carson, who will compete in the discus, will be joined by LaBoris Bean, Jimyria Hicks and Alesha Peel as well as coaches Pete Kron and Shannon Atkinson at the meet. Bean will run in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles, after earning All-America honors in the event earlier this month. Hicks will compete 100- and 200-meter dash and Peel will complete in the 100-meter hurdles.

Bean, Hicks (100-meter dash) and Carson will begin competition Thursday. Hicks will compete in the 200 on Saturday as will Peel.

Competing in Jamaica for the Sooners will be Sand Swaby (high jump and pole vault), Aldwyn Sappleton (800), Ryan Clarke (400 intermediate hurdles), and Raoul Harvey (400-meter dash). In addition, former Sooners Michael Blackwood (400-meter dash), Omar Brown (400-meter intermediate hurdles and possibly the 400-meter dash), Kevin James (400-meter intermediate hurdles), and Danny McFarlane (400-meter dash) will participate in the Jamaican Nationals. Competition in Kingston begins on Thursday and continues through Saturday. Co-head coach Rodney Price took the group to Kingston for the meet.

Swaby will high jump on Thursday and pole vault on Friday. The 400-meter dash events begin with prelims on Thursday and continue by rounds through Saturday's final. The opening event in the 800 is Friday with the final set for Saturday and the 400-meter intermediate hurdles are set to begin on Thursday with the final set for Friday.
