OU sophomore Marek Velicka will compete in the ITA National Indoor Championships in Ann Arbor, Michigan, at the University of Michigan Varsity Tennis Center, Nov. 4-7. The tournament is the premier indoor collegiate tournament for NCAA Division I men and women. Velicka is one of 32 men competing in the singles draw.
Velicka qualified for the tournament by winning the singles championship title in the ITA Region V tournament. Velicka’s trip to the tournament marks the first time in 13 years a Sooner has advanced to this prestigious tournament. Velicka goes into the indoor championship with a fall record of 10-3 and after defeating nationally ranked opponents in the regional tournament, Velicka expects his game to improve and have a successful tournament.
“I’m expecting a great experience,” said Velicka. “To compete well with great players because it is a national tournament. It is the best tournament in the nation and I want to enjoy it and play my best.”
Velicka takes on UCLA’s Ben Kohlloeffel on Thursday in first round action. Second and quarterfinal rounds will be on Friday with semis on Saturday and finals on Sunday.
