Sooners Set 4x800 Program Record

SEATTLE – The 23rd-ranked University of Oklahoma men’s track team kick-started the 2012 indoor season Saturday with a record-setting performance in the 4x800-meter relay at the UW Indoor Preview. The team of Riley Masters, Daniel Mazar, Brandon Doughty and Eric Harasyn finished second in the event with a time of 7 minutes, 26.98 seconds, breaking a 20-year old program record. Todd Maycumber, Marcus Moore, John Duffy and Tommy Green set the previous record of 7:29.08 in 1992.

UW Indoor Preview Results

Oklahoma’s second team of Kevin Schwab, Frezer Legesse, Kevin Williams and Taylor Wardall finished fifth with a time of 7:38.12.

All four individual runners for the Sooners set personal records in their respective events. Williams led a trio of OU runners in the mile, crossing the line in 4:06.50 for a third-place finish. The time was more than two seconds better than his previous best in the event (4:08.61).

Schwab finished just behind Williams in his first collegiate mile, coming in fourth in 4:06.62. Wardall took seventh in the event with a personal best time of 4:08.26. All three times are the top three in the Big 12 this year and rank in the top 15 nationally.

Legesse took third in the 800-meter run, finishing with a personal-best 1:52.31. His mark is the third-best Big 12 time in the event and ranks in the top 20 nationally.
Masters, Mazar, Doughty and Harasyn ran 3:27.32 in the 4x400-meter relay to finish fifth.

Oklahoma hosts the 12th annual J.D. Martin Invitational next Saturday, Jan. 21, at the Mosier Indoor Facility. Field events begin at 10 a.m. with track events underway at noon. Admission is free.
