NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma baseball team garnered its second preseason ranking when the Baseball Weekly/ESPN Top 25 poll listed the Sooners 19th in its preseason college baseball poll which was released today. OU's other preseason mention came from Collegiate Baseball who ranked the Sooners 15th in its initial poll.

"We're excited to see how we stand in the first preseason polls," said Head Coach Larry Cochell. "Our high preseason rankings are indicative of our success from last year and the number of accomplished players we have returning to lead our club this year."

Oklahoma trails fellow Big 12 Conference opponents Nebraska (No. 7) and Baylor (No. 16) and sits a spot ahead of Texas (No. 20) in the poll. Other 2001 opponents Arizona State and Alabama are ranked sixth and 23rd, respectively.

OU returns 11 lettermen, including five starting pitchers, from the 2000 squad that went 41-23 overall and hosted an NCAA Regional in Oklahoma City. The regional appearance followed a third place finish in both the Big 12 regular season and conference tournament.

The Sooners open the season at home on Friday, Feb. 2, against Oklahoma Baptist at 3 p.m. at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
