STILLWATER, Okla. -- Senior Lynette Velazquez hit two home runs to boost the ninth-ranked Oklahoma softball team to a 6-2 victory over Oklahoma State Friday at Cowgirl Field in Stillwater, Okla. With the win, the Sooners won the regular-season Big 12 championship with a 12-3 conference record. They ended the regular season at 38-12.

This is the second time OU has won the regular-season championship (1996) and it is the first school to win two championships in Big 12 play. The conference began in 1996.

The Cowgirls jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but Velazquez tied the game with a solo homer in the fourth inning. OSU took a 2-1 lead after scoring one run in the fifth.

Once again, it was Velazquez who provided the offense for the Sooners. In the sixth, Lisa Carey reached base with a single. Velazquez followed Carey and smashed a two-run homer to give OU its first lead of the game at 3-2. OU added three more runs in the top of the seventh to clinch the championship.

Velazquez's two dingers gave her a total of 18 on the year, which breaks a school record for most home runs in a single season. The Huntington Beach, Calif., product broke Casey Dickson's record of 17 home runs in 1997.

Jennifer Stewart earned her 20th win of the year, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits and four walks. She struck out six batters. The freshman improved to 20-3 overall and 7-1 in conference play.

OU returns to action in the Big 12 Tournament, which is scheduled May 12-15 at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Okla. The Sooners will be the number one seed and are slated to play Thursday, May 13, at 10:00 a.m. against the winner of Wednesday's game (May 12) between the eighth and ninth seeded teams.
