NORMAN, Okla. – Second-ranked Iowa State (8-2, 1-0 Big 12) proved to be too tough for the 10th-ranked University of Oklahoma wrestling team (12-2-1, 0-1-1 Big 12), as the Cyclones posted a 21-12 victory at the Howard McCasland Field House in Norman Friday evening.
On a night when members of the legendary 1951-1960 Sooner squads were honored, Iowa State took control of the top-10 battle by winning five straight matches in front of an Oklahoma crowd of 1,213.
“That is the difference between No. 2 and No. 10,” head coach Jack Spates said. “We had some bright spots, but we were looking for something extravagant and didn’t get it.”
Beginning at 157 pounds, Chad Terry put Oklahoma on the board first with a 3-2 decision over Cyclone Andrew Sorenson. The Midwest City, Okla., product scored the match’s only takedown in the first period and scored an escape in the third to improve to 7-2 (1-0 Big 12) on the season.
Jon Reader, ranked No. 3 nationally for ISU at 165 pounds, quickly took control of No. 18 Tyler Caldwell of OU (18-8, 0-2 Big 12) by posting a 19-4 technical fall to put the Cyclones up, 5-3. Reader recorded five takedowns, two nearfalls and a reversal to claim the evening’s second bout.
Junior Jeff James (11-3, 2-0 Big 12) put the Sooners back on top, 6-5, with a 3-1 decision over Duke Burk at 174 pounds. James scored the bout’s first points in the second period after choosing the down position to lead 1-0. After scoring a takedown with 11 seconds remaining in the second, James allowed only an escape in the third period to win.
Cyclone Jerome Ward, ranked eighth, gave the visitors an 8-6 team lead with a 10-3 decision win over Erich Schmidtke (14-11, 0-2 Big 12) at 184 pounds. Schmidtke only mustered three escapes to counter Ward’s four takedowns in the loss.
The nation’s top-ranked 197-pounder gave Iowa State its first back-to-back win of the evening with a 9-3 win over No. 6 Eric Lapotsky (18-4, 1-1 Big 12). Varner posted two takedowns and a reversal to put ISU on top, 11-6.
Fourth-ranked Cyclone David Zabriskie then took down No. 12 Nathan Fernandez (22-7, 0-2 Big 12), 5-3, in overtime to give Iowa State a 14-6 team lead. Dating back to last season, it marked the second straight overtime battle between the Big 12 foes.
Moving to 125 pounds, fifth-ranked Andrew Long handed No. 20 Jarrod Patterson (19-7, 1-1 Big 12) a 10-4 defeat. Patterson scored a takedown in the final period but saw his rally fall short, as the Cyclones extended their lead to 17-6.
Twelfth-ranked Nick Fanthorpe then made it a 21-6 ISU lead by topping Sooner freshman Kendric Maple (20-5, 0-1 Big 12) by a 14-6 major decision at 133 pounds.
Fifth-ranked Zack Bailey (18-5, 1-1 Big 12) finally stopped the bleeding for Oklahoma, halting a five-match Cyclone win streak at 141 pounds. The Kansas City, Mo., native scored two takedowns and a pair of escapes to win, 6-4, narrowing the ISU lead to 21-9.
Kyle Terry (19-2, 2-0 Big 12) made it back-to-back wins for Oklahoma with a 6-4 decision over No. 10 Mitch Mueller at 149 pounds. It marked No. 10 Terry’s 29th-straight dual win dating back to last season (11-0 this season, 18-0 last year).
“It was a good job, just not extravagant,” Spates said. “That is what you need to beat a team as good as Iowa State.”
Oklahoma returns to Big 12 action on Feb. 4 when it takes on the Nebraska Cornhuskers in Lincoln at 7 p.m.
