Men's Golf Team Finishes In Fifth At The Maxwell

ARDMORE, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma men's golf team finished in fifth place at the 12th annual Maxwell Intercollegiate in Ardmore, Okla., today. The Sooners shot a final-round score of 290 (+10). Oklahoma State was the tournament winner with a three-round score of 829 (-11). The tournament was held at the 6,442-yard, par-70 Dornick Hills Country Club.

"I think we were awfully rusty," said OU head coach Jim Ragan. "The kids didn't practice very much last week because of finals and it certainly showed. We had some flashes of brilliance. We had some times when we had it going pretty good and times when we gave it right back. We have some things we need to work on, but it will all work out."

Junior Blake Martin (Stigler, Okla.) led the way for the Sooners by tying for fourth place, a career low, with a score of 207 (-3). He shot a career-low-tying 67 (-3) in the first round, which included a score of 30 (-4) on the front nine holes. Martin is coming off a then-career-best seventh-place finish at the Big 12 Championships.

"I played well today," Martin said. "But I didn't take advantage of the birdie putts that I had. It's been a lot of fun playing in The Maxwell. It was really exciting being the leader heading into the final round. It was a big challenge for me because I've never led in a college golf tournament. It was a new experience and very fun."

Senior John Kidwell (Dallas, Texas) shot a four-under-par 66 in the final round for the second-best score of the day and finished in a tie for sixth place. Kidwell entered the final round in 30th place. Junior Doug Manor (Garland, Texas) showcased consistency this weekend by shooting a 70 in the first round, 71 in the second and 73 in the third. He finished at four over par and tied for 16th place.

Rounding out the scoring for the Sooners' team were freshman Jim Renner (Plainville, Mass.) and junior Martin Flores (Mansfield, Texas), who finished in 66th and 74th place, respectively.

Among those competing for OU as individuals, freshman Brodie Flanders (Petitcodiac, New Brunswick) tied for 35th place after shooting a three-round 224. Seniors Matt Cohn (La Jolla, Calif.) and Parker Foster (Tulsa, Okla.) finished tied for 68th place, while sophomore Brad Purcell (Norman, Okla.) finished tied for 78th place in his first tournament this year.

The Sooners return to action May 15-17 when they compete in the NCAA Central Regional at Colbert Hills Golf Course in Manhattan, Kan.
