NORMAN, Okla. - Senior Stephanie Webb was one of a record 13 student-athletes to be awarded a $5,000 postgraduate scholarship by the Big 12 Conference today.

A committee of three faculty representatives, one senior woman administrator and one director of athletics form the selection committee for the prestigious awards, which help the student-athletes continue their formal education. At least 10 outstanding student-athletes from Big 12 member institutions are named annually as recipients of the awards.

Criteria for these awards included a cumulative grade point average of 3.500 on a 4.0 scale, participation in at least two years of intercollegiate athletics at the scholar-athlete's respective institution, and completion of athletics' eligibility. The scholar-athletes also must graduate from their respective member institutions within 15 months of their selection as postgraduate scholarship recipients and are expected to enroll in graduate/professional schools within two years after they graduate.

The $2,500 individual grants began in 1996-97, were raised to $5,000 in 1999, and have provided $267,500 in financial aid since May, 1997, to deserving recipients. The group of 13 scholar-athletes in 2001 brings the total number of student-athletes lauded to 51 in five years.

This is just the latest academic honor for Webb, of Bartlesville, Okla.. She has a 4.0 grade point average in chemical engineering and was named to the Big 12 All-Academic team and the 10-member Verizon Academic All-District Women's Spring At-Large first team earlier this month. She also was one of 150 OU students inducted this spring into Phi Kappa Phi, a national honorary, for her academic achievements.

Webb was a leader for the Sooner cross country and track distance squads. Webb had a career best in the 5000-meter run at the Big 12 Championship on May 19. She also posted the best time on the team in the indoor 3000-meter run and the outdoor 3000-meter run. She had the second best 1500-meter time on the team as well.

An honors scholar at OU, she was a three-time Academic All-Big 12 honoree in track and earned Academic All-Big 12 honors in cross country three times. A multi-time Dean's and President's Honor Roll selection, Webb was named as a Phillips 66 Classroom Champion and has been on the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll eight times.
