OU Earns First Big 12 Win
April 5, 2009
LINCOLN, Neb. – The 41st-ranked University of Oklahoma men’s tennis team (11-7, 1-3 Big 12) claimed its first Big 12 victory Saturday at No. 49 Nebraska (16-5), 4-3.
“It was a great win over a Big 12 opponent,” OU head coach Paul Lockwood said. “I’m proud of the guys for fighting hard.”
The Sooners win over the Huskers marks their first Big 12 victory after dropping matches to No. 7 Baylor, 11th-ranked Texas and No. 14 Texas A&M earlier in the season.
OU is coming off a win over No. 35 Rice, 4-3, on Friday, April 3. The win marks OU’s third consecutive out-of-conference victory, after beating No. 60 Mississippi State and 63rd-ranked Hawaii.
“We were out there competing hard and giving great support to each other,” Lockwood said. “I’m proud we came away from this weekend with a record of 2-0, including wins over Rice and Nebraska.”
OU began the match winning the pivotal doubles point and took the early, 1-0, lead. Junior Andrei Daescu and sophomore David Pultr, No. 45 nationally, led the charge for the Sooners. They defeated the Huskers Christopher Aumueller and Benedikt Lindheim at the No. 2 position, 8-3. Daescu and Pultr are undefeated in Big 12 action and 11-1 on the spring season.
At the No. 1 position OU’s senior Sergey Avdeyev paired with sophomore Ionut Beleleu to defeat Nebraska’s David Bendheim and Calin Paar, ranked No. 59 nationally, 8-3.
In singles action, both Daescu and Avdeyev gained victories for the Sooners. They soundly defeated their competition at the No. 1 and 2 positions, respectively.
Beleleu was the third Sooner to gain a win and the only Sooner to win both singles matches he competed in this weekend. He defeated the Huskers Hendrik Stahmer, 6-3, 6-2.
“We will now start our preparation for OSU next weekend,” Lockwood said.
The Sooners return to action next Saturday, April 11, when they take on instate rival and 30th-ranked Oklahoma State. The match is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
