WACO, Texas - The Oklahoma men's track & field team finished second with 133 points at the Big 12 Championships at the Hart-Patterson Track Complex on Sunday. The OU women's team came in fifth with 78.5 points.

The Sooner men's point total was the highest at a Big 12 Championship in program history, helping OU to its fourth-straight finish in the top three. The women's team finish and point total are both the second-highest at the Big 12 Championship in program history.

Texas claimed the men's title with 144.5 points while Kansas won the women's title with 158 points.

"I thought the men had their best meet of the season," said OU head coach Martin Smith. "We performed well enough to make it close and stay with it at the end. It's a good catalyst for NCAAs coming up."

Oklahoma crowned three conference champions on the day, including senior Patrick Casey in the men's 1,500 meters, senior Tre' Lathan in the 110-meter hurdles and freshman Avione Allgood in the women's javelin. Coupled with senior Tia Brooks' win in the shot put and senior Kevin Schwab's 10,000-meter title, OU finished the weekend with five champions overall, including three on the men's side and two from the women's team.

"The ladies had a great weekend," Smith said. "The women really stepped up and this is something I really think they can build on and was their best meet of the season as well."

Casey broke a seven-year-old Big 12 record with his first conference outdoor title, winning the 1,500 meters in a career-best time of 3:40.04. Senior Riley Masters, the 2012 champion in the event, came in second with a time of 3:41.22.

Lathan, an All-American in the 110-meter hurdles last season, won the first Big 12 title of his career, finishing in a time of 13.70. Junior Matt Wicks also scored for OU by finishing fourth in 14.04, easily setting a career high.

In a competition featuring four of the top 10 throwers on the current women's javelin national performance list, Allgood earned the title with her final throw of the day, going 52.19 meters for the win. The throw was a career high and gave OU its fourth-straight women's outdoor Big 12 javelin title. Joining Allgood in the javelin was freshman Elizabeth Herrs, finishing fourth, and junior Ashley Kowalewski, finishing eighth.

Participating in his first Big 12 meet, freshman Tyler Renton's throw of 63.46 meters in the javelin earned six points for the men in a third-place finish, the highest by a Sooner in the men's javelin since 2006.

Also for the men's team, junior Waymon Storey finished third in the 200 meters with a time of 20.84 seconds. Senior Wayne Walls set a career-high and moved into the top 25 nationally with a triple jump of 15.63 meters, finishing fourth overall. Fellow Sooner Deon Pinder took seventh with a jump of 14.32 meters, giving OU a total of seven points from the event.

Lathan, Storey, Ethan Baker, Nathaniel Winfrey came in second in the 4x100 relay with a time of 40.32 seconds. Winfrey also ran the 400-meter hurdles, finishing fourth with a career-high time of 51.54 seconds.

Senior Kristen Rice was the conference runner-up in the high jump, her best finish ever at the Big 12 Championship, reaching a height of 1.75 meters, just shy of her career best but a season high. Junior Erin Jones added a third-place finish in the 100 meters, clocking in at 11.42 seconds.

Oklahoma now moves on to NCAA competition in the West Regional held May 23-25 in Austin, Texas. Qualifiers will then have a chance to compete at the NCAA Championships held Jun 5-8 in Eugene, Ore.
