TULSA, Okla. – The 31st-ranked Oklahoma women’s tennis team lost to No. 20 Tulsa, 5-2, on the road Saturday, Feb. 4 at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on TU’s campus.
“I was actually very pleased with our performance tonight,” OU head coach David Mullins said. “Our doubles was better despite some one-sided scores and we gave ourselves a chance in five out of the six singles matches.”

Oklahoma (4-2) lost just its second doubles point of the season to the Hurricane to give TU a 1-0 lead heading into singles.

“As long as I keep seeing improvements, I will be very happy with this team,” Mullins added.

The Sooners’ 22nd-ranked Marie-Pier Huet and Whitney Ritchie claimed OU’s sole doubles win against the Hurricane, defeating TU’s Anastasia Erofeeva and Ewa Szatkowska at the No. 1 spot, 8-5.

OU’s two freshmen won both singles points for the Sooners.  Nicole Long won the first singles point to tie the dual at 1-1 after beating TU’s Bonny Davidson in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.

Tulsa (4-1) claimed the next point to lead 2-1, but OU’s Abbi Melrose tied the match once again at 2-2 by defeating Isaura Enrique, 6-3, 6-4.

The Hurricane won the final three matches to clinch the victory over OU.  TU’s Samantha Vickers, ranked No. 63 nationally in singles, secured the win for TU by winning its fourth team point after beating Huet at the No. 1 singles position, 6-3, 6-4.

The Sooners are back on the road next weekend, heading to Fayetteville, Ark., to play No. 32 Arkansas on Friday, Feb. 10 at 11 a.m., and No. 25 Yale on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 11 a.m.
