Tulsa, Okla. - The OU women's soccer team won 2-1 on Tuesday night in a non-conference contest against the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles in Tulsa. The game was played in a rain storm that included 40-mph winds. The Sooners scored two goals before ORU cut the lead in half with a goal late in the second half.
"It was nasty out there," said OU head coach Randy Evans, who notched his first-career victory. "We weren't quite as sharp tonight as we were against Alabama, but we gave terrific effort. It was really nice to get in the scoring column."
The wind and rain had an impact on the game and the Sooners' game plan in particular. OU was forced to play against the wind in both halves as it switched directions during halftime. The weather didn't seem to hamper the Sooner offense as it outshot ORU 19-10.
"The weather had a huge impact in the second half," said Evans. "We could no longer play the possession style that we like to play. The game ultimately became a battle."
Forwards Heather Martinelli and Jonette Coquat led the OU offensive attack, registering a goal apiece. Assisting on the goals were Brianne Strothers and Heather Morrison, respectively. Junior goalkeeper Ayn Toppin recorded two saves in 90 minutes for the Sooners. ORU's lone goal came on a 35-yard shot by Carrie Harrison.
"Heather Martinelli was causing havoc on the front line with her energy," said Evans. "Jonette and Heather Morrison had a great combination on the second goal to get behind the defense."
The Sooners, now 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the Big 12, continue their season-opening eight-game road swing at San Diego State this Friday. The Toreros return five starters from a team that went 12-6-2 last year.
