No. 4/5 Oklahoma vs. Southwestern Oklahoma State
Exhibition Game #2
Tuesday, Nov. 06, 2001
OU Field House, Norman, Okla.
Oklahoma Head Coach Sherri Coale
"In another exhibition game, you find out a little bit more about your team, work on your substitutions, work on your timing, try to get better at some things that weren't so good last week and we did. We got a lot better in a lot of different areas. It was really good for us not to shoot the ball very well in the first half. We figured out how to win and how to be successful without going 8 for 10 from the three-point line like we did last week.
"I thought Lauren Shoush as a freshman had a really good game. She did some good things defensively as well as shot the ball well. We just have to keep working. We're still making too many mistakes but it's early in the season."
On finding a new way to win:
"We're going to have to be creative and find different ways to win. We've got a lot of really good players. They margin of error is very small because when you don't have many players to go to and you don't have much size within those players, margin of error is very small. Our players have to be smart, stay out of foul trouble and be smart about our shot selection. Caton is going to have to be really smart inside. She and Jamie Talbert are going to have to be good together. But we have some good players, so we'll be okay."
Senior Guard Stacey Dales
On getting the season started:
"I think that we understand our weaknesses and we're ready to get going with the season. It's not always a pretty site initially but we're ready to get the season started. We'll make some huge improvements in the next couple of practices in preparation for Purdue. It's going to be fun to play against Purdue because it's going to be such a battle and we're excited. It's always great to play against great teams."
Senior Guard LaNeishea Caufield
On getting her spark back:
"I think I was just trying too hard at the end of last season and I was getting really frustrated and forgetting to have fun. When I went to Europe this summer and played with girls from the Big 12 Conference, I was with different teammates and had fun playing with them, but at some point I realized how much I enjoy playing with my teammates and how much fun we have playing together. Basketball is a game and I should be having fun playing it. Ever since I've been back, I've been excited to play. I've been excited in practice, I can't wait for games and it's just been fun."
Southwestern Oklahoma State Head Coach Shelly Pond
"I knew the pressure defense was going to get to us, they are bigger and quicker at every position on the floor. We can't even simulate that in practice. We don't have the athletes they have, it took us a few minutes to get in the flow of the game. I saw a lot of good things and some bad things and some things we need to work on. That's understandable, we've only been practicing about three weeks."
