Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championship served as good experience for young Sooners.
Norman, Okla. The University of Oklahoma men's tennis team had three members of its 2003-04 squad compete in the prestigious Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championships last week in Chattanooga, Tenn. With more than 250 competitors, the Sooners were competing among some of the NCAA's best singles players.
In first round action, OU's Matt Long (Ft. Worth, Texas) lost to top seeded Pedro Rico of Pepperdine, 6-2, 6-1, while Alexei Ivanov (Izhevsk, Russia) fell to Winthrop's Clayton Almeida, 6-1, 6-2, at the Champions Club.
In early pre-qualifying singles action, Oklahoma's top singles player, Tommy Garrison (Enid, Okla.) suffered a tough 6-4, 6-4 loss to Brigham Young's Alonso Medina. Garrison, a sophomore, became the first Sooner since 2000 to compete in the NCAA Individual Championships a year ago. He teamed up the former Sooner Chris Mitchell for the doubles portion of national's last year.
The Icy Hot ITA Men's All-American Championships offered the first national singles and doubles titles of the season, and are followed by the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in November and the third event is the season-ending NCAA Championships in May.
The Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championships included 256-singles player and 128-doubles team prequalifying tournaments played October 3-6 which feed into 64-player and 32-doubles team qualifying tournaments October 7-8. The 64-player, 32-doubles team main draw took place Oct. 9-12. The singles tournament fields can run over 300 players, making it the largest collegiate event of the season.
The Sooners return to the court on Oct. 17-19 at the Midland Invitational in Midland, Texas.
