COLLEGE STATION, Texas — The Oklahoma women’s distance medley relay opened Oklahoma’s weekend with a win Friday night at the first of two days of action at the Big 12 vs. SEC Challenge presented by Mondo. The quartet of Kelsey Brown, Shelleyeka Rolle, Natalie Crain and Molly Ferguson teamed to run a time of 11:34.51, topping Georgia, Texas A&M and Kansas State. The time is the eighth fastest in the nation this season and gives the Oklahoma women’s program its 11th event win of the early season.
Brown opened the relay on the 1,200-meter leg and handed off to Rolle in third with a split of 3:35.25. Rolle turned in a split of 54.73 on the 400-meter leg to move the team into second. Crain took over on the 800-meter leg and took the lead with a split of 2:12.24 before handing the baton over to Ferguson for the anchor mile leg. Ferguson held the lead throughout her leg, clocking a split of 4:52.30.
The men’s distance medley relay of Ross Larimer, Trayvion Jones, Colin Slattery and Richard Renteria took second with a time of 9:55.01, the fifth fastest time in the nation this season. Larimer led off with a split of 3:01.92 on the 1,200-meter leg before Jones turned in a split of 48.31 on the 400-meter leg. Slattery ran the 800-meter leg in a time of 1:52.66 while Renteria’s split on the mile was 4:11.90.
Claire McConnell finished 14th in the pentathlon with a total of 3,070 points. McConnell opened the night with a time of of 9.36 in the 60-meter hurdles before clearing 4-11.75 (1.52) in the high jump. McConnell then recorded a distance of 32-7.00 (9.93) in the shot put before leaping 14-11.25 (4.55) in the long jump. McConnell closed out the competition with a time of 2:35.67 in the 800-meter run.
Action at the event kicks back up Saturday at 11 a.m. with OU action slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. as Jasmine Simmons competes in the women’s triple jump.
