Women's Gymnastics Moves Up to No. 7

NORMAN, Okla. The University of Oklahoma women’s gymnastics team moved up two spots to No. 7 in this week’s GymInfo Coaches Rankings.

Lousiana State holds the No. 1 spot with a  regional qualifying team score of 196.575. UCLA (196.465) is second and Michigan (196.365) is No. 3.

Oklahoma’s regional qualifying team score is 195.805.

At No. 5, Big 12 rival Nebraska (196.215) is the only conference opponent ahead of the Sooners. Iowa State (195.575) is No. 9 and Missouri (193.235), who the Sooners defeated Sunday, is No. 24.

The Sooners event rankings remained steady, except for beam. The Sooners jumped from the No. 16 to No. 7 on the heels season-high scores on the apparatus in two of the last three meets.

Individually, Sooners also litter the top 25.

Sophomore Ashley Cooney and senior Erin LaBarr are ranked on three separate events as well as being to of the nation’s top all-around competitors.

Cooney, the nation’s No. 4 all-arounder, is tied for second on vault, No. 24 on balance beam and No. 5 on floor exercise. Cooney performed her third consecutive 9.9-plus vault at Sunday’s meet. The Plano, Texas, native lowest score on the apparatus this season is a 9.8.

LaBarr owns the No. 8 all-around ranking, No. 10 on uneven bars, No. 10 on beam and No. 20 on floor. The Bartlesville, Okla., native most recently recorded a season-high matching 9.9 on beam, despite increasing the difficulty of her routine.

Junior Kristen Cox also appears in the rankings at No. 18 on floor, while sophomore Brittney Koncak holds the No. 22 bars spot.

The Sooners, who just completed a stretch of three meets in eight days, all wins, compete again Friday, Feb. 25, against the Iowa State Cyclones in Ames, Iowa.
