STILLWATER, Okla.- The No. 26 and second-seeded Oklahoma men’s tennis team will advance to day two of play in the NCAATournament after defeating third-seeded Cal, 4-3, at the Stillwater Regional on Saturday.

“It was a great win,” said OU Head Coach Paul Lockwood.  “My players fought so hard from start to finish and found a way to win.  There were two keys to the victory today.  The first was the win at No. 1 doubles for the point for the 16th time this season.  The second was picking up two critical three-set wins.  Velicka and Chavarria both fought back to win after being down one set.  I am extremely proud of the guys and we are looking for the chance to go to Athens, Ga. tomorrow afternoon.”

OU began the match winning the doubles point.  At the No. 3 slot senior Marek Velicka and junior Ryan Thomas defeated Cal’s Mouillon and Sebescen in a long 9-7 match.  The doubles point came down to the No. 1 slot where junior Federico Chavarria and freshman Andrei Daescu downed the Cal tandem of Browne and Pettit.

In singles play the Sooners won three of six matches.  Competing at No. 2 singles, Valicka picked up his 20th win of the season against Browne.  Valicka dropped the first set 4-6 but battled back to win 6-3, 6-3.

At the No. 3 slot Daescu handed Cal’s Heavey a loss in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.

Chavarria finished out strong at the No. 6 slot coming from behind.  He fell to Cal’s Stewart in the first set 4-6, but came back to take the win 6-2, 6-2.

The victory over Cal improved Oklahoma’s record to 20-7 overall.  This makes the first 20-win season since 1994 when the Sooners finished the season 22-7.

The Sooners will face the winner of Oklahoma State and Sacramento State.  If Oklahoma State wins it will be the third time they have faced the Sooners this season.

The match will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 13 at the DeBois Tennis Center located on the OSU campus.  Live scoring of the match will be provided at www.okstate.com.  Results will be posted as soon as they become available.
