NORMAN, Okla.--The University of Oklahoma men’s tennis began competition Thursday in the Wilson/ITA Central Regional Championships in Tulsa, Okla. The tournament will run through Monday, Oct. 23 with the singles and doubles champions receiving spots in the National Indoor Championships Nov.2-5 in Ohio.
Competing in the 64-player singles draw for Oklahoma are senior Marek Velicka, juniors Federico Chavarria and Ryan Thomas and freshman Ondrej Kacmar.
Velicka, who was seeded No. 4 in the tournament, defeated Luka Marinkovic of ISU in his first match, 6-0, 6-2. The win advanced him to the round of 32 where he faced UA’s Drew Sosebee. Velicka won the match in two quick sets 6-3, 6-0. The victory advanced him to the round of 16 where he is scheduled to play NU’s Adrian Szatmary on Saturday.
Chavarria suffered a loss to UA’s Colin Mascall, 2-6, 3-6, dropping him to the consolation bracket. In the first round of consolation play, Chavarria competed against Richard Harrison of UMKC. He lost the match in two set, 4-6, 6-7 (0), eliminating him from the tournament.
Thomas met Francois Van Impe of NU in the first round. He won the first set 7-6 (4), but was defeated in the next two 1-6, 4-6. The loss moved Thomas to the consolation bracket where he faced Lucas Waked of SIU. He defeated Waked, 6-4, 6-4, to advance to the next round. Thomas is scheduled to play Juan Carlos Nunez of UALR in the round of 16 on Saturday as well.
Kacmar competed against Andrei Nicoara of UA. He lost the match 5-7, 4-6 to drop to consolation play. Next, Kacmar suffered a loss to Tiago Espirito Santo of WSU, 5-7, 4-6, and was eliminated from the tournament.
Teaming up for the Sooners in doubles competition were Velicka and Chavarria and Thomas and Kacmar. Velicka and Chavarria, seeded No. 2, faced Harrison and Patrick Smith of UMKC. The duo won the match 8-5 and is scheduled to play OSU’s Ivan Puchkarov and Artie Burmistrau in Saturday’s action.
Thomas and Kacmar defeated Hendrik Stahmer and Arturro Navarro of NU, 8-6. The pair’s next match will be against Luka Marinkovic and Daniel Tobar of ISU.
