Men's Tennis to Compete at UNLV

Oklahoma (3-0) will be one of eight teams competing in the UNLV Men’s Tennis Invitational on Feb. 13-15 in Las Vegas, Nev. Hosting the two-day event at the Fertitta Tennis Complex will be the Rebels of UNLV. Action is set to start at 10 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, and at 9 a.m. on Sunday.

Series record/last time:    OU has not played in the UNLV Invitational since back-to-back years in 1996 and 1997. The Sooner men swept Weber State in 1996, and then were defeated by UNLV and Tulsa. Oklahoma beat Michigan State and San Diego State in 1997 and then fell to UNLV again. 

Last Match Recap
The Sooners defeated regional opponent Oral Roberts, 7-0, for the sixth consecutive time last Friday.  The win bumps OU to a perfect 3-0 record and leaves ORU with a 0-4 start. 
Sophomore Tommy Garrison (Enid, Okla.) and freshman newcomer Marek Velicka (Prerov, Czech Republic) continue to remain undefeated as a No. 1 doubles team with an 8-4 win over ORU’s Tyrone Hill and Adam Ehrlich.
Sophomore Alexei Ivanov (Izhevsk, Russia) and junior Matt Long (Ft. Worth, Texas) knocked off ORU’s Wessel Kemp and Chris Moore, 8-6. The Sooner pair now have a record of 14-2 at No. 2 doubles.

Newcomers Come To Win
The Sooner newcomers continued their winning streak against Oral Roberts last week. Sophomore Lee Gregg (Altus, Okla.) and junior Ondrej Fukala (Prerov, Czech Republic) took home  straight-set victories. Fukala won his first No. 2 singles match against ORU’s Wessel Kemp, 6-2, 6-1, and Gregg swept ORU’s Patrick Guillard for his second win at No. 6 singles.
Fukala and junior Silviu Tanasoiu (Sibiu Romania) picked up another No. 3 doubles win. Freshman Marek Velicka (Prerov, Czech Republic) and sophomore Tommy Garrison (Enid, Okla.) defeated their opponent to make their record 3-0.
OU Will Host 2004 Big 12 Championships
Oklahoma will host the 2004 Men’s and Women’s Big 12 Tennis Championships this spring at the Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman. Tournament action begins Fri., April 30, and runs through Sun., May 2. Tickets will be available to purchase at the OU Athletics Ticket Office. For more information, call (405) 325-2424.
