NORMAN, Okla. – The OU women’s gymnastics squad held on to the No. 2 ranking for the fourth consecutive week after improving to 6-0 on the year with a quad meet win over Alaska-Anchorage, N.C. State and TWU at the 2010 Metroplex Challenge in Dallas on Jan. 30.
OU swept all four team event titles in Dallas and improved to 47-6 in the regular season under fourth-year head coach K.J. Kindler after the Sooners notched individual titles on bars (Hollie Vise – 9.925), beam (Vise – 9.925) and floor (Jackie Flanery – 9.95) last Saturday.
Top-ranked Alabama remained at No. 1 for the second straight week, while Florida and Utah switched spots, with the Gators currently at No. 3 and the Utes in fourth. Oregon State rounded out the top five.
Oklahoma returns to the Lloyd Noble Center on Friday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. (CT) for a meeting with conference-rival Nebraska (No. 10) and TWU (NR). The meet is OU’s annual “Flip for a Cause” meet in promotion of women's heart health awareness.

Every Monday throughout the season, senior gymnast Kristin Smith will give OU gymnastics fans an inside glimpse into the Sooner program with weekly recaps, meet previews and insight into life outside of the gym for the reigning Big 12 Champions. This week's installment focuses on OU's lengthy trip to Dallas for the Metroplex Challenge due to the weather and how the team spent its free time while in Texas.
WEEK 4 | FEB. 1, 2010
Good morning Sooner fans!
Hope everyone had a wonderful week and a safe weekend! The beginning of our week started off with some classes and some detail-oriented workouts. We had planned on leaving for Dallas on Friday morning, but the winter storm caused some travel adjustments We ended up leaving early Thursday morning so that we could bypass the weather before it got too bad. Man was that a great decision! We got a couple inches of ice, followed by 5-7 inches of snow!
We arrived at our hotel on Thursday afternoon. The hotel had a loft feel with a mix between hip hop/contemporary. It was awesome! The rooms had great views of downtown Dallas. Many of us thought that we were in New York City, living in a high-rise apartment. It was a lot of fun spending three days in the hotel.
Thursday night we enjoyed a nice team meal. It was wonderful having graduated members, Haley (DeProspero) Horton, Gina Lesko, and Jessica Kinder join us, as well as some former OU men's team members in Russ Czeschin and Reed Pitts. We then walked around Northpark mall for a little while to enjoy some time with all of them.
The next morning we had breakfast in Jen’s room, and then headed to the mall for some intense shopping. Northpark mall was incredible, if any of you have the opportunity to go there, we highly recommend it! We then had lunch and headed to the arena to workout. The practice was a lot of fun and the energy level was incredible. It was probably one of the most fun practices we’ve had at a meet site.
We then headed back to the hotel to get ready for dinner. Saturday morning was pretty relaxed. We had breakfast and then some of us went back to the mall to enjoy some more shopping. I think it’s pretty safe to say we are some girls who love to shop. We then went to lunch and began preparing for the competition.
The competition was at the Dallas Convention Center hosted by Metroplex Gymnastics. We competed against Alaska-Anchorage, N.C. State and TWU. All of the girls from the other teams were very nice. As far as the meet was concerned, it went pretty well. We had a couple errors that we haven’t really had to deal with so far this season, so it was great to see how we handled the situation. Kudos to Kayla Nowak for handling some very tough situations that were in her way, and Jackie for receiving a perfect 10.0 from one of the judges on floor, it was very exciting!
We look forward to getting back into the gym today to work on some of our problem areas.
The fans were great, as we once again had many supporters of Oklahoma gymnastics. We then signed some autographs and hung out with some fans after the meet. We then boarded the bus and headed back to Norman. We got in late Saturday night and then began the de-icing phase of our night as our cars were completely covered in ice and snow. If I had to give an award for the best “Ice Scraper” it would go to KJ... She is a pro!
This weeks practice will be a very important week of focus, determination and paying close attention to details. We begin our stretch of conference meets this weekend with our first one against the University of Nebraska, as well as another face-off with TWU We hope to have everyone come out and support OU!
Have a safe weekend and we’ll see you all at the showdown on Friday night.
