Men's Gymnasts Claims Team Title, Fare Well In Individual Finals

NORMAN, Okla. - In its second meet of the year and first on the road, the Oklahoma men's gymnastics team (6-0) proved why its ranked No. 1 by claiming first place and outscoring the No. 2 team in the country, Iowa, 214.425 to 209.100 at the Rocky Mountain Open in Colorado Springs. Colo.

"This meet is a good sign of what's going to happen this season," said head coach Mark Williams. "It was a rather long competition but the guys performed well. I am happy and proud of their efforts."

Leading the Sooners for the second week in a row was junior Daniel Furney, who garnered a second-place finish in the all-around with a 52.450 to lead the team to a first place finish. Furney placed third in the pommels and the parallel bars in the team event.

"I want to congratulate Daniel Furney on his performance," said Williams. "The fact that he placed second in the all-around in a meet this big is a good omen for the rest of the season."

The Sooners dominated the pommels with junior Josh Landis in first, freshman Josh Gore in fourth and senior David Johnston in sixth. Junior Brett Covey claimed the rings title, while freshman David Henderson and Johnston placed fourth and fifth, respectively. Sophomore Jock Stevens won the vault and freshman Michael Gehart took third. Stevens also won the floor exercise with junior Shannon Carrion placing second.

In individual competition on Saturday, Stevens won the vault and floor exercise with scores of 9.550 and 9.675, respectively, to break his career high in both events. Covey also went away with a first place finish in the rings (9.500). Landis (high bar), Furney (pommels), Henderson (p-bars and rings) and Gehart (vault) took second place in their respective events.

The Sooners are back in action on Saturday, Feb. 2, against Michigan and Nebraska at the Howard McCasland Field House. Meet time is set for 7 p.m.
