Sooners Move on in Qualifying Action

NORMAN, Okla.   Two University of Oklahoma men’s tennis players advance in the qualifying portion of the 2004 Icy Hot/ITA Men’s All-American Championships in Chattanooga, Tenn.  The qualifying tournament, played at the Champions Tennis Club began Monday with 128 singles players and 64 doubles teams.

Fukala defeated Damar Johnson of Louisville in a strenuous three-set match, 3-6, 7-6, 6-3.  Fukala will play Tuesday at 9 a.m.  OU junior Alexei Ivanov lost to Luiz Carvalho, whose competing as an individual,  6-7, 6-2, 6-3.

In doubles action, the duo of Fukala and junior Tommy Garrison are the only Sooner pair to compete in qualifying doubles play.  The duo won their opening match against Evghenii Corduneau and Amanjott Singh of UL-Lafayette 8-2.  Fukala and Garrison continue play  at 1 p.m. Tuesday.
