Sooners Second Heading into Finals

OKLAHOMA CITY Junior Sam Hazewinkel took third place in session five at the 2006 NCAA Championships Saturday morning at the Ford Center.  This is the third straight year that Hazewinkel has captured third place and been named an All-American. 

Hazewinkel defeated Cal Poly’s Chad Mendes by a decision of 7-1 to reach the third place match against No. 1 Nick Simmons of Michigan State. 

Simmons and Hazewinkel have met three previous times with Hazewinkel winning the first two matches and Simmons taking the most recent bout by a decision of 4-2 in February.  Hazewinkel defeated Simmons 6-2 this time around  to take third place.

Matt Storniolo (149-pounds) finished one better this year at the NCAA Championships taking home fourth place honors, finishing three places better than last season’s finish of seventh.

Storniolo opened up session five with a pin of Hofstra’s Jonathan Masa at the 6:21 mark.  He than faced Oklahoma State’s Zach Esposito in the third place match, which he lost by a decision of 6-4. Storniolo earned All-America honors for the second straight year.

Junior Joel Flaggert (197-pounds) won his final match of the championships to earn a fifth place medal.  Flaggert lost his opening match to Jerry Rinaldi of Cornell by a decision of 5-4, than was awarded an injury default win over Hofstra’s Chris Weidman to win earn fifth place.  Flaggert earned All-America honors yesterday for the second year in a row.

Senior Jake Hager (Heavyweight) finished his career with a pin of Ohio State’s Kirk Nail at the 2:28 mark to capture seventh place.  Hager finishes his Sooner career with a 67-32 record and earned All-America honors this year for the first time in his career.

Oklahoma sits in second place heading into session six with a team score of 80.5. Oklahoma State wrapped up the team title yesterday and now sits with 114.5 team points. Minnesota sits in third place with a score of 76. Teyon Ware will wrestle in the 141-pound final tonight.

Championship finals begin at 6 p.m.
