NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma senior gymnast Mariana Goncalves was named the Big 12 Conference Gymnast of the Week as announced by the conference office. Goncalves played an integral role in the Sooners' 196.475 to 193.550 victory over Ohio State on Sunday. OU's score is the fourth highest in the nation.
"Mariana (Goncalves) has really come into her own this year and looks better than ever," said head coach Steve Nunno. "Being named Big 12 Gymnast of the Week was to be expected because of her all-around score. We expect this to be a banner year for her."
Goncalves posted a meet and career-high all-around score of 39.525, while placing first in the vault, uneven bars and tying for first on the floor exercise and the balance beam.
"The team score puts us in fourth place in the nation and it's the highest placing in the program's history," added Nunno. "I feel that our team is going to get better all season and we will raise that score."
The Sooners return to action on Saturday at Texas Woman's University in Denton, Texas. The triangular meet, which begins at 7 p.m., will also feature Southern Utah.
