FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Sarah Pappas broke the OU pole vault record while Sherine Wells claimed the 200-meter title to lead a small group of Oklahoma Track and Field athletes Friday at the Arkansas Twilight. With the meet marking the final action of the regular season, the Sooners now turn their attention to next week's Big 12 Track and Field Championships in Norman. Tickets for the event can be purchased by visiting SoonerSports.com or calling the OU Ticket Office at 405-325-2424.
Pappas used a clearance of 13-8.50 (4.18) to break the Oklahoma record of 13-7.25 (4.15) set earlier this season by teammate Alexandra Acker. Pappas took just one attempt at the record-breaking height to place her name atop the OU record books as she finished third overall and second among collegiate athletes. With the clearance, Pappas moves up to No. 19 in the nation and No. 4 in the Big 12.
Wells covered the half lap in a time of 23.89 to win her first event of the season as she easily won the event by a full second. Wells is the third Sooner of the season to win a title in the 200-meter dash, joining Candyce McGrone and Shawna Anderson.
Jasmine Simmons finished second in the long jump with her second-best jump of the season, 20-8.50 (6.31). Simmons' top jump came on her fifth attempt as she was second after the first round of jumps and never gave up the position. Rose Richmond, an unattached athlete from Kansas, won the event with a jump of 21-3.25 (6.48).
Latoya Greaves clocked her best time of the season after finishing third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.27. Greaves, who entered the meet with a 2011 best of 13.58, ran 13.34 in the prelims of the event. Jesica Ejesieme also ran a season best by running 13.69 in the prelims, the eighth-fastest time in Oklahoma history.
