NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma women's soccer team faced a nationally ranked team for the second consecutive game, but this time came up short as OU lost to No. 11 Texas A&M, 3-1, Friday in front of 393 fans at the OU Soccer Complex.
The loss dropped the Sooners to 8-7-1 overall and 3-4-1 in the Big 12 while the Aggies improved to 12-5 and 6-2.
Texas A&M struck first in the 23rd minute when Kristen Strutz bounced a header over Sooner goalkeeper Jana Cunningham. Strutz was assisted by Jodie Mitchell on the play.
At 58:19, Andrea Starns gave the Aggies a 2-0 lead after she scored off a double assist from Michelle Royal and Amber Childers.
OU narrowed the margin to one at 71:15 when it registered an "own goal" after the ball deflected off of Aggies' defender Amber Reynolds and into the net following a Krissy Dawson serve.
Texas A&M ended any hopes of an OU comeback in the 86th minute of play when Heather Ragsdale took a cross from Strutz and recorded the Aggies' third goal of the night. Before the cross, Strutz had taken a long pass down the left sideline from Juli Goin. Both players were credited with assists.
Aggies' goalkeeper Esther Thompson earned the win to up her record to 9-1 while Cunningham (6-6-1) took the loss.
"I was extremely happy with the high level of play," said Oklahoma Head Coach Randy Evans. "However, Texas A&M showed why it was ranked 11th in the country with its efficiency of finishing off scoring opportunities. That's something we just haven't been able to do."
The Sooners wrap up their home schedule Sunday when they face Big 12 co-leader Texas at 1 p.m.
