Sooners Advance in ITA Championships

NORMAN, Okla. Advancing in the pre-qualifying rounds of the 2004 Icy Hot/ITA Men’s All-American Tennis Championships were two singles players and two doubles teams from the University of Oklahoma Saturday. OU junior Lee Gregg opened the day with a easy 6-4, 6-0 victory over Mississippi State’s Josh Irey at the Champions Tennis Club Chattanooga, Tenn.

Teammate Marek Velicka, a sophomore and highest seeded Sooner in the tournament, defeated Nick Edlefson of Minnesota in a tough three-set match, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6.  With the victories, Velicka and Gregg moves on to the round of 32 and will face Peter Oredsson of SMU and Eric Molnar of Alabama, respectively, at 9 a.m. Sunday.

In doubles play, Velicka and Gregg’s success continued as the pair cruised to an 8-4 victory over Manhatten’s Diego Alvarado and Zoltan Bus, however, the Sooners suffered a tough 8-6 loss to Florida’s Marty Steigwardt and Stefan Tell in the following round.

OU’s veteran team of senior Silviu Tanasoiu and junior Alexei Ivanov joined in the winning as they started doubles play Saturday with 8-4 win over Emir Basic and Van Swelm of Troy. Brady Crosby and Jose Orozco of Western Michigan handed the Sooners an 8-5 loss in the round of 32. Oklahoma’s doubles play is now complete at the ITA Al-American Championships.
