NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma senior forward Whitney Palmer was one of 30 NCAA women’s soccer student-athletes selected as candidates Wednesday for the 2010 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award.

A two-time Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll honoree and member of the President and Dean’s Honor Roll, Palmer has excelled on the field and already finds herself atop of five OU single season or career records.  She ranks in the top five of six others, including second in career goals scored (29) and third in total points (61).  In 2009, Palmer ranked 12th nationally in goals scored with 15, an OU single-season record.

She was recently named an All-Big 12 preseason pick for the second consecutive year, a first by a Sooner soccer player.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

Palmer and the Sooners open the 2010 regular season on Friday, Aug. 20 at 7 p.m. against Oklahoma State.  The non-conference installment of the Bedlam Series will be played in Stillwater, Okla.  The Cowgirls will return the trip on Oct. 29 for a Big 12 showdown and season finale at the OU Soccer Complex.
