NORMAN, Okla. – The 22nd-ranked Oklahoma women’s tennis team opens competition at the 2011 Blue Gray Tournament on Friday, Feb. 25 at 8:30 a.m., as the Sooners face No. 36 Alabama in the first round.
Oklahoma (5-1) is the third-seeded team in the tournament that features eight nationally-ranked teams. No. 9 Virginia earned the top-seed, No. 19 Notre Dame is the two-seed while No. 43 Ohio State is seeded fourth. Also participating in the tournament are No. 36 Alabama, No. 48 DePaul, No. 51 Utah and No. 64 Auburn.
“We are very privileged to have received an invite to this prestigious event,” OU head coach David Mullins said. “I was fortunate to compete in the event as a student-athlete and I am excited that my team will also get the same experience.”
The Sooners won the last meeting with Alabama, 4-3, on Feb. 6, 2010 in one of the program’s biggest upsets. OU was unranked at the time while the Crimson Tide was 30th in the nation.
“I am anticipating another long exciting match with Alabama in the first round,” Mullins added. “Both teams are two of the most improved in the country so there should be a lot of great tennis Friday morning.”
OU has won the doubles point in all six matches this season. Maria Kalashnikova and Whitney Ritchie are currently 5-1 overall in doubles play, while No. 59-ranked Ana-Maria Constantinescu and Alice Radu and Tara Eckel and Marie-Pier Huet are both 4-2 overall.
The Sooners only loss this season was to reigning national champion and top-ranked Stanford, while OU has defeated three nationally ranked opponents, No. 29 UNLV, No. 14 Arkansas and No. 73 Minnesota.
