NORMAN, Okla. The OU men’s tennis team will travel to Tulsa over the weekend to compete in the Central Region Qualifier Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 20-21.
The tournament will jump start Oklahoma’s 2007 campaign after their season opener against Prairie View was cancelled last Saturday due to severe weather.
The Sooners will face the top seven teams in the region in the qualifier at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. All squads will be vying for a spot at the ITA/ USTA National Men’s Team Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Illinois Feb. 15-17.
No. 60 Oklahoma enters the tournament as the No. 4 seed and will square off against No. 61 Nebraska in their first contest Saturday at 8 a.m. The winner of the match will advance to battle No. 16 Oklahoma State Saturday at 4 p.m.
“We’ve had a good week of practice and I think that the players are ready to play. I look forward to the challenge of playing the Cornhuskers,” OU Head Coach Paul Lockwood said.
The Sooners are led by senior Marek Velicka who is ranked No. 74 in the nation, respectively. Velicka is one of four returning letter winners for the Oklahoma as they welcome four newcomers to the squad.
