ARDMORE, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma men's golf team shot rounds of 291 and 282 to finish out the first day in fourth place with a score of 573 (+13) at the 11th annual Maxwell Intercollegiate in Ardmore, Okla. OU trails team leader Oklahoma State by eight strokes going into Sunday's final round of 18 holes.

For the second tournament in a row, the Sooners are in reach of their first team title of the season and senior Cody Freeman (Arnett, Okla.) and junior John Kidwell (Dallas, Texas) are once again in the hunt for an individual championship.

Freeman shot a combined score of 138 (-2) and is currently tied for first place with Oklahoma State sophomore Hunter Mahan. He finished out the day with an even-par 70 after firing a first-round 68.

"The course was playing pretty difficult this morning," said Freeman. "I just tried to hit the smart shot when I could."

Kidwell is tied for fourth and only two strokes behind Freeman after carding a second-round 68.

Sophomore Doug Manor (Garland, Texas) rebounded nicely in the second round carding a season-low 71. Manor is tied with three other golfers for 20th with a score of 146 (+6). Junior Matt Cohn (La Jolla, Calif.) finished up the day tied for 31st with a 149 while sophomore Martin Flores (Mansfield, Texas) rounded out the scores for OU with a 151.

"Our guys had a rough round this morning," said OU Head Coach Jim Ragan. "I think we had to adjust to the format of all five guys playing together and then we came out and played very well in the afternoon round. It's always nice to go into the final round with a chance to win. I think our players played with confidence today. Doug Manor did a nice job stepping in at the five spot and posted a nice round this afternoon. And any time you have players like Cody and John who are both playing really well, you have a chance to win."

The Sooners will be looking for its first team and individual titles Sunday at 8 a.m. at Dornick Hills Country Club. Due to the threat of bad weather, teams will be playing in a shotgun format.
