TULSA, Okla. - For the first time in the history of the men's tennis program three Sooners will partake in the D'Novo/ITA All-American Championships main draw, hosted by the University of Tulsa, following an impressive five days of qualifying action.
"The tournament competition has really gone up and Costin (Paval) and Johny (Ionut Beleleu) have really stepped up and played discipline tennis today," said head coach John Roddick.
Going into the tournament Senior Andrei Daescu, No. 49 nationally, was the only Sooner guaranteed a seed in the main draw event after being named an automatic qualifier.
Freshman Costin Paval advanced to the main draw after defeating Auburn's Tim Puetz (No. 54) 7-5, 6-1. Paval began the tournament in pre-qualifying action on Saturday and has since rattled off seven wins, two of which came against ranked opponents.
Junior Ionut Beleleu became OU's second player to qualify for the main draw following his impressive victory over Southern Cal's Daniel Nguyen. Beleleu took the first set 7-5, and won the second set 6-1. Beleleu is now 3-0 in the tournament and holds wins over two ranked players.
"This was a really impressive win for Johny today," said Roddick. "He defeated the No. 6 singles National Champion from last year in straight sets."
In doubles action Daescu and Beleleu, No. 39 nationally, proved to be too much for Texas' Ed Corrie and Vasko Mladenov, 8-3.
"Everybody has played well and gone through the right process," said Roddick. "The results from this week are starting to show that."
After five days of All-American Championship competition Roddicks netters are an impressive 18-2.
