Roddick's Squad Booms at All-Americans

TULSA, Okla. – The Oklahoma men’s tennis program continues to roll at the D’Novo/ITA All-American Championships, hosted by the University of Tulsa.

“I’m really proud of the guys,” said head coach John Roddick. “The consistency has been great and the guys keep focusing on executing. It has been a really good outing for us.”

After the fourth day of action the Sooners have a combined singles and doubles record of 13-2.

In singles action junior Ionut Beleleu started the day off strong defeating Tulsa’s Philip Stephens, No. 65 nationally. Beleleu dropped the first set 6-1, but rallied taking the next two sets 6-2, 7-5.

Freshman Costin Paval continues to prove he can be one of the best freshmen in the country after defeating San Diego State’s Achim Ceban. Paval defeated the nation’s No. 66 ranked player 6-2, 6-2.

Tuesday marked the beginning of doubles action for the Sooners as OU’s Beleleu teamed with Andrei Daescu. In their first match the nations No. 39 ranked tandom defeated Hawaii’s Philip Eberhard and Dennis Nevolo, 8-3.

The duo then turned their attention towards Western Kentucky’s Michael Calderon and Kazuya Komada. The Sooner duo won in convincing fashion, 8-3.

“We have set ourselves up to face some great opponents from her on out,” said Roddick. “Our guys are putting themselves in great positions and are really playing hard.”

Tomorrow’s action continues when Beleleu takes on USC’s Daniel Nguyen at 9 a.m., while Paval is set to battle Auburn’s Tim Puetz, No. 54 nationally, at noon. In doubles action Beleleu and Daescu are set for a red river showdown against UT’s Ed Corrie and Vasko Mladenov.
