Velicka Ends Play at National Indoors Championship

ANN ARBOR, Mich.-- University of Oklahoma men's tennis sophomore Marek Velicka fell to KC Corkery of Stanford, 7-6, 6-3, in the consolation semifinals in the ITA National Indoors Championships on Saturday at the University of Michigan Varsity Tennis Center.

Velicka's quarterfinal match against Boise State's Matias Silva went to three sets, and would test both players perseverance. Velicka lost the first set by a break of serve, 4-6. In the second, Velicka came out on top, 6-4, forcing the two players to play a third and final set. After losing a close match to Ben Kohlloeffel, of UCLA Thursday, Velicka came out in the third set determined to change the outcome against Silva on Saturday. This time the outcome changed as Velicka took charge and defeated Silva, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.

The win advanced Velicka to an afternoon match in the semifinals of the consolation bracket against Stanford's KC Corkery. In the first set, Velicka fought hard losing it, 7-6 (4).  Corkery wore Velicka down and ended the match with a straight set, 7-6 (4), 6-3.

After strong play against top opponents all weekend, the loss ends fall play for Velicka, who won the ITA Region V singles title to earn a spot in th 32-player field, with a record of 12-5.
