WACO, Texas – Roddick’s squad began play at the Baylor Invitational Friday. The Sooners had a successful first day led by sophomore George Chanturia who continues to thrive against stellar competition.

“It was a good day of tennis for our program,” said head coach John Roddick.

One player that stepped up his game going into his sophomore campaign is Chanturia. He began play handily defeating Piotr Banas (ULL) 6-1, 6-2. He followed that performance with a come from behind three-set match, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, to top Texas Christian’s Chris Price.

“George showed a lot today winning both of his matches,” said Roddick. “He has really raised his game over the past two weeks. This is something really exciting to see. He is showing he can execute at a higher level than he has in the past.”

Roddick is also getting a better feel from his newest netter, freshman Costin Paval. Paval dropped his first match against Wisconsin’s Patrick Pohlmann 4-6, 7-5, 6-4. In the consolation bracket Paval proved why he was so heavily recruited, defeating UTA’s Dimitry Minkin 6-1, 6-3.

“Costin took care of business in his second match and played pretty well,” said Roddick. “He showed he can play at a high level with some of the better guys on top teams.”

Also competing in the tournament for the Sooners is senior Andrei Daescu and junior Ionut Beleleu.

The duo won their first two doubles matches. They began the day defeating Tennessee’s Brewer and Stevens, 8-4. Then they took it to Tulsa’s Phillip Stevens and Ashley Watling, tromping the duo, 8-2.

In singles action Daescu started strong downing Wichita State’s Vlad Marinescu 6-0, 7-6. In his next match he took the first set 6-2, but dropped the next two, 6-4, 6-3, to Tennessee’s Matt Bewer.

“Andrei is one of the better players in the country but he let guys stick around and he needs to finish them off,” said Roddick.
