NORMAN, Okla. -- With play suspended due to darkness, the OU men’s golf team sits in 16th place at the CordeValle Collegiate in San Martin, Calif. The Sooners are at +8 for the tournament and will complete their second round at 9 a.m. (cst) Tuesday morning.
After firing an opening round 65, freshman Ben Blundell is in a tie for seventh place at 6-under with four holes to play in his second round. The Rowlett, Texas, native bogeyed two of the first three holes of his afternoon round before responding with an eagle at the par-5 15th. After back-to-back bogeys at 16 and 17, Blundell closed the back nine with a birdie at the par-5 18th. Six consecutive pars on the front nine leaves the freshman three shots back at the suspension.
Beginning the second round one stroke off the lead, Stanford is in first after Monday’s play, firing a darkness-suspended 15-under-par second round. Two Cardinal golfers have three holes to play before their second round is complete.
Stanford’s Zack Miller leads the individual standings after posting a 9-under-par 63 in the second round. With 10 birdies, an eagle and three bogeys, the Cardinal senior set a new CordeValle Country Club course record, besting the effort of Blundell’s opening-round 65.
Rebounding from his opening-round 76, freshman Jesse Schutte is at even for the second round. The Florence, Ore., native had three birdies to go along with three bogeys through 12 holes and sits in a tie for 65th at +4. After starting the tournament with an even-par 72, senior Nick Sheedy is a stroke back of Schutte at +5, placing him in a tie for 70th. Rounding out the OU scoring are junior Phillip Bryan and senior J.J. Wood who are at +7 and +10 respectively.
Tuesday’s 18-hole final round will begin immediately after completion of the suspended second round.
