NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma men's golf team shot a four-under 284 on the first day of the Bill Hitchcock Intercollegiate at the par-72, 6,689-yard Saugahatchee Country Club Friday. The Sooners, who are tied with Southeastern Louisiana for third place, trail host and tournament leader Auburn by three strokes. Freshman golfer John Kidwell shot a season-low 68 for OU and is in second place individually behind Mississippi State's Alex Rocha, who shot a tournament-record 62. Rocha's round shattered the Hitchcock Intercollegiate record of 66, and also tied the course record. His 29 on the back nine also set a tournament record.
OU's Rodrigo Breton, who redshirted the entire 1998-99 season, returned to tournament play for the first time since the 1998 NCAA Championships. An opening-round score of 70 has the junior in a tie for sixth place, and is a pleasant surprise for head coach Gregg Grost.
"We definitely had some guys step up today that have yet to do so this year," said Grost. "We got off to a great start on a good golf course."
Grost said the weather on the course could be interesting on Saturday. Thunderstorms are expected late Friday night, and could push back tee times for Saturday morning. In addition, 30 mph winds are expected.
OU will begin play in the second round Saturday morning and will conclude with the final round on Sunday.
