NORMAN, Okla. -- Senior captain Lauren MacIver was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday. It is the second such honor for the Tulsa, Okla., native who earned newcomer honors during her freshman season (2002).
The Big 12 Conference also announced on Tuesday that Bettina Grossman (Oklahoma State) earned the weekly defensive honor and Angelika Feldbacher (Oklahoma State) was named the top newcomer for games played from Sept. 13-19.
Against Tulsa and Oral Roberts last weekend, MacIver recorded five points and was named to the Oklahoma Shootout All-Tournament Team as the Sooners went 2-0 in the annual event.
On Friday against Tulsa, the senior became the first Sooner in the program’s history to record a goal in four consecutive games. MacIver also added an assist in the 3-0 win over the Golden Hurricane. She followed that performance with two assists against Oral Roberts in the Sooners’ 4-1 victory on Sunday. MacIver has recorded a point in six of OU’s eight games this season.
With three assists over the weekend, MacIver has 15 in her career and is tied for first place on OU’s all-time career assists list with three other Sooners (Krissy Dawson, Jonette Coquat and Shannon Wing). She is also fourth on OU’s career list in points (43) and tied for fourth in goals with 14.
After eight games and with 11 still remaining in 2005, MacIver has tied three individual season highs. The captain is tied for the team lead in goals with four and leads all Sooners with five assists and 13 points. She posted identical numbers in 2002, a season where she earned Second Team All-Big 12 honors as a sophomore.
OU, who at 7-1 is off to the best start in program history, will look to extend its five-game winning streak on Sept. 23 with the last non-conference game of the season against Texas State. It marks the first-ever meeting with the Bobcats and Friday’s action will start at 7:30 p.m. at John Crain Field. The Sooners will then open Big 12 play on Sunday, Sept. 25 in Norman against Texas at 1 p.m.
